Behind the Brand | Gudrun & Gudrun
Gudrun & Gudrun is the latest Danish brand to join The Standard Store family. It’s always a good sign when the staff jump on things to purchase them as soon as they come in - and that’s what happened when this box arrived! Hailing from the Faroe Islands, an island in the Kingdom of Denmark with a population of ~50,000 people with more sheep than people, Gudrun & Gudrun are truly committed to community and the environment.
The merino wool used in the garments is (of course) sourced locally on the island. They call their wool 'Faroese Gold' because Faroese sheep have distinctive colour patterns with a double layered fleece. The outer layer is long and wavy which provides insulation through winter, while the under layer is fine making the wool soft and breathable in warmer weather. The wool maintains its natural properties and is processed without chemicals and dyed naturally.
All the pieces are made by female artisans who are known by name and called friends - mostly from the Faroe Islands, but other artisans from remote communities in Jordan, Peru, and Lithuania. The knits in this seasons collection are flat sewn giving them a uniqueness and fragility that is impossible not to fall in love with. The lightness of the merino wool makes them perfect for wearing alone to fight off the chill, but we love them just as much as layering pieces.
